How do keepers change auction values?

Keepers remove players from the pool and money from the room at the same time. In most leagues the pool loses value faster than it loses dollars, because people keep bargains rather than fair-priced players. Every remaining dollar then buys fewer points above replacement, so the players still available get more expensive. How much depends on what the keepers cost, not only on who they are.

Does keeping players make the draft pool smaller?

Usually not, which surprises people. A keeper who was already inside the draftable pool vacates the same roster slot they would have filled, so the cut stays at the same overall rank and the pool is just the old pool minus the keepers. The pool only shrinks when someone keeps a deep sleeper who was never going to be drafted at all. So the real effect of keepers is on price, not on how far down the board you draft.

Which players should my league keep?

Compare what a player would cost in the post-keeper auction against what it costs to keep them. That gap is the keeper surplus, and positive surplus means retaining them is cheaper than buying them back. Ranking every team's options by surplus shows you the whole league's incentives at once, which is what tells you who will actually be available.

Which positions get picked over?

Measure the share of each position's draftable value that keepers removed, not the change in its prices. Prices all move by one league-wide rate, so a per-position price change carries no positional information. A keeper set that looks balanced by headcount is often badly unbalanced by value: keeping four tight ends can take most of the tight end value in a league, while keeping five running backs takes only about a third.

Why is one player priced above a whole team's budget?

That happens when cheap keepers leave a lot of money chasing a thin pool, and it is arithmetically correct rather than a bug. It is telling you that player will go for whatever the richest manager in the room can physically put on the table. We report the number instead of capping it, because the cap would hide exactly the thing worth knowing.
